Jay Strother, senior pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church in Tennessee, announced he will step away from ministry for an extended period after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.
The 50-year-old father of five said doctors discovered a malignant mass in his abdomen in December and warned that treatment will likely involve major surgery and a lengthy recovery. While the full treatment plan is still being finalized, Strother said the road ahead “will not be easy.”
Quoting Matthew 6:33-34, he told his congregation he is taking the journey “a day at a time” and invited the church to pray for him and his family. He emphasized that the church is not built around one leader and urged members to stay focused on its mission, encouraging them to remain active in small groups and service during his absence.
