PJ's Two Funeral Services

Praise the Lord that PJ's viewing service and funeral service at the Corps went really well. During the Viewing Service, I spoke about Psalm 23 - God loves us, never leaves us when we go through our darkest time, He sets a table before us in Glory, and His goodness and mercy is always upon us. During the Funeral Service, I spoke on Phil. 1: 23 "Christ in me is to live, to die is to gain." We gain a a better body, home, fellowship, and inheritance! Praise God that He loves us so much that He does all of these for and with us! To Him be the Glory!

Merry Christmas

Seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus, the Prophet Isaiah writes, "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this. Is. 9: 6-7

Kenya Tragedies

These four days have been hard for the people of Kenya. Terrorists from Somalia, along with 2 or 3 American and a British woman staged this assault and murder of innocent lives. Without accounting for bodies that may be buried in the rubble, at least 61 civilians and six security officers had died in the attack, in addition to some 175 injured. 5 suspects are dead, and 11 are in custody. Today will mark the beginning of three days of national mourning. Pray for these people and their families. May God's peace and comfort be upon these people. May justice be served!

General Andre' Cox

SALVATION ARMY ELECTS NEW INTERNATIONAL LEADER Commissioner André Cox Elected as 20th General of The Salvation Army LONDON, 3 August 2013 – Commissioner André Cox, a Swiss-British Salvation Army officer, has been elected as the 20th General of the Christian church and charity. The election took place at the High Council, which saw 117 of The Salvation Army’s senior leaders from around the world gather just outside London for the sacred task of choosing the next international leader. The General accepted his new responsibility in a spirit of humility, saying that, irrespective of the rank he held, he had not moved away from his original calling to officership – to be God’s servant and to proclaim the gospel. General Cox shares his ministry with his wife, Commissioner Silvia Cox, who is the World President of Women’s Ministries. Together General and Commissioner Cox will lead the 1.5 million-strong worldwide church of The Salvation Army. Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, to an English father and Swiss mother, André Cox spent his childhood years in Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom, before moving to Switzerland, where he met his wife and from where they entered training to become Salvation Army officers, taking up their first appointments in 1979. The 59-year-old General has vast experience of the international ministry of The Salvation Army. In the early years of his Salvation Army officership, General Cox held appointments in Switzerland and Zimbabwe. More recently he has served as the territorial commander in the Southern Africa Territory, the Finland and Estonia Territory and the United Kingdom Territory with the Republic of Ireland. In February 2013 he was appointed as Chief of the Staff – second in command of the international Salvation Army. On being announced as The Salvation Army’s 20th General, the new international leader told more than 10,000 people from around the world watching via a live webcast that he was thankful to God but aware of the ‘awesome task that has been placed upon our shoulders’. He continued: ‘I pray that The Salvation Army will be known for being a force for good in the world … that The Salvation Army will be a force for positive change and transformation in the communities in which we serve … [and] that Salvationists will live up to the spiritual values we proclaim.’

Next General of The Salvation Army

On the third morning of the 18th High Council of The Salvation Army, the Chaplain’s prayers centred on God’s people being united in the Spirit. Using the song ‘Saviour and Lord, We Pray to Thee’ (The Song Book of The Salvation Army 692) the Chaplain (Commissioner James Condon) emphasised the prayer being made: ‘Pour out thy Spirit … and let thy love thy will dictate.’ The members from the six Indian territories were invited to sing, and they presented a simple chorus: ‘Hallelujah, Praise the Lord!’ in which everyone was able to join. After members had spent time in prayer with one another the Chaplain concluded with words of Jesus: ‘I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one – I in them and you in me – so that they may be brought to complete unity' (John 17:22,23 New International Version). The day’s business began with the Chair of the Questions Committee being invited to describe the work of the committee in compiling the proposed questionnaires for General and the spouse of the General. Commissioner Clive Adams explained that all questions submitted by members had been reviewed by the committee and had provided the basis for the final draft questionnaires which were considered and approved by the full council. This part of the High Council’s business concluded, the council moved to the nomination of candidates. To prepare themselves for the next part of the proceedings members sang: ‘Here, Lord, assembled in thy name thy work to do, thy help we claim’ (Song 581). Reading from James 3, the Chaplain reminded everyone of the wisdom they needed, before offering prayer. A quiet, prayerful atmosphere pervaded the chamber as members of the High Council received their nomination papers and left the room to fulfil the task entrusted to them. The candidates who have accepted nomination to stand for election to the office of General are: Commissioner André Cox, Commissioner Kenneth Hodder, Commissioner James Knaggs, Commissioner Dick Krommenhoek and Commissioner Barry Swanson. Commissioner Clive Adams declined the nomination. Report by Major Christine Clement High Council Communications Officer

Neil's Health

Dear Friends and Family, I am pleased to let you know that my chemo-treatment continues to be working after all this weeks and months. I am currently on the 7th cycle on this particular "Clinical Trial Drug Treatment Study" and though the doctors cannot definitely say or determine at this time how much longer I still need to have treatments, I will continue to have weekly treatments until they feel I have reach certain marker. Although the overall results were positive, there were a couple of lesions that slightly increase in very small size (1 mm each)- the analysis indicated that the slight increase may not be a progression of tumor but something more technical yet suggest we continue to monitor it in the next couple of test. My doctor tried to explain the reason for the increase and was not concerned at all. The oncologist was very positive and encouraged about the overall positive progress saying that he has never seen this type of positive progress before in any of his case. He mentioned that I am very lucky to be part of this particular clinical study that is showing significant decrease positive results. When he reviewed the latest CT Scans he thought he got the wrong slides and had to double check it again too make sure it was indeed my scans because he did not see any recognizable lesions from previous scans. He added that some of the lesions were not visually visible with the eye and some are no longer measurable. So overall, the majority of lesions are stable and is not growing or spreading. God is really good to have us where we are in USC Medical Cancer Treatment Center. The doctors and nurses are believers and they just know what to say. In fact the first thing that my doctor said was to light a candle in the church to offer thanks (referring to his Catholic tradition when something good happens or blessing comes to light a candle to Jesus as a way of thanksgiving). We were laughing because although we were not Catholics I guess it something that we could do perhaps we told him (hahaha). Then we went on talking about being Protestants but yet we were all Christians. Our clinical trial nurse too is a very strong and solid Christian always encouraging to be positive and to keep praying because she really believes that prayer is what is making the drugs work. I want to again thank you all again for being an encouragement to myself and my Ohana. It's feels quite a long time being in treatment after all this months but God has been my strength throughout days and months. With your prayers, I am always encouraged and grateful for your faith in the Lord in the miracle and power He will provide through for his GLORY. My next test and result will come again in two (2) months (I know- it's a long time to wait but it's all good). In the meantime, please continue to pray for comfort and strength physically, emotionally and spiritually. More specifically I covet your prayers in the following: *comfort with the numbness in my toes and fingers (can't even open simple packages or botton-up my botton-collar) *pray for the infection in my fingers nails to heal- it can be very sensitive at times ( I like to wash the dishes sometimes jus to feel the warmth and clean the fingers) *pray that the effectiveness and potency of the medications continues to be the same (the doctors have decrease the dosage of two medications due to the high toxicity resulting in the nail infection) *pray for the strength in time of fatigue so I am able to continue to be part of the corps ministry. *prayer of PRAISE for my Kids- they are handling it all so well. I am so proud of them and just to see them sing, dance and play in the band this weekend made me CRY out of joy and gratefulness of how God is bringing them through it all the challenges and differences in our lifestyles. *pray for Rubina for continued strength as a wonderful care-taker and mom at the same time and a Pastor also. *pray for our corps and the awesome leaders and pastoral team. I cannot really express in words how much I am so blessed to have you all in my life and know that you are with me through this journey discovering and experiencing God's love and grace. Thank you for all your support. May God richly bless you and your family. In God's Service, Captain Neil N.

National Day of Prayer

On the National Day of Prayer, time for a revival Posted by Greg Laurie on May 2, 2013 at 8:09 am Pastor Greg Laurie is the Honorary Chairman of the task force for the National Day of Prayer, observed May 2. Everywhere we look in America, we see signs of decline. That’s because we have largely forgotten God, but the good news is God has not forgotten us. In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God says, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” In other words, America has two options: judgment or revival. Of course, revival is God’s work; it cannot be manufactured by men. But if we want Him to work, then we must pray. So on the National Day of Prayer on May 2, my most fervent prayer will be for a spiritual awakening. With all of the problems in our country — political, economic, moral and social — the only lasting solution is to turn back to God. The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. Clearly, the fate of the country we love so much hangs in the balance. So what does the future hold? Is America going to end up on the ash heap of history? Or are our greatest days still ahead? No one can say with certainty. When I study the Scriptures, I can’t find America in the End Times. I can find smaller nations like Iran and, of course, Israel. But there is no passage that clearly speaks of America, the undisputed superpower on the face of the planet today. That doesn’t mean there won’t be an America in the last days, but it will be a different America than it is now. We know this much: America’s days are numbered. No country lasts forever. Rome, once the reigning superpower, collapsed internally before it collapsed externally. Unlike Rome, the United States was built on a Judeo-Christian foundation, but we have strayed dramatically from the vision of our Founding Fathers. Freedom of religion seems to have become freedom from religion. We have removed God from our schools, our sporting events, our public places and our workplaces. But the freedom we enjoy was built on the foundation of absolute truth. And when you remove that foundation, freedom can turn into anarchy. That’s what’s happening in our country today. We don’t like the idea of a family of a man and a woman married for life. We don’t like the idea that there are things that are right and things that are wrong. We prefer moral relativism, where we can all choose our own truths. But Scripture indicates that there is hope for America. The Book of Jonah tells the story of a wicked city that turned to God and escaped his judgment. Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, the superpower of its day, was renowned for its wickedness and violence. Archaeologists have discovered monuments built by the Ninevites with inscriptions boasting of their cruelty. But the Lord decided to give Nineveh one last chance, and he summoned the prophet Jonah to go to the Ninevites and preach to them. Despite Jonah’s obvious failings – and a detour in the belly of a whale – the Ninevites turned to the Lord en masse and repented of their sin and he spared them. If God could bring a revival to Nineveh, surely he can do the same for America. Pastor Greg Laurie is the Honorary Chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force and the founder of the Harvest Crusades. Harvest America 2013 will be simulcast live from Philadelphia on Sept. 28–29.

Facebook: Meaghan

Meaghan is Captain Laura F. daughter. Laura is stationed in Broomfield Colorado. She and her late husband are sessionmates of mine. "Sitting in the ER with Meaghan. She cut herself a lot after a hard day of bullying and so called friends making comments about her deceased father. Had to call 911. Breaks my heart to see her hurting. Makes me want to break some people. Please pray for us." A couple of many prayers on FB wall. Ronalee F. Oh, my heart just hurts right now. I am praying ... Lord, please let Meaghan see how precious and beautiful she is. Completely cover her with Your Spirit right now. I cry out to You and ask You to strengthen Laura, as she wrestles with all of the emotions that come from grieving for the loss of Tom, and the pain of seeing her precious daughter struggling. Laura and Meaghan need You RIGHT NOW. Lord, please...with everything in me, I ask You make your perfect and living presence known to them at this very moment. Kathy B.W. So sorry Laura. Can't imagine how hard it is to see your girl hurting so badly. Lord Jesus, please apply your healing ointment to the wounds that don't show on the outside. To the infection festering on the inside that has brought this young one to this point. Give Laura wisdom and strength to know how to love her daughter the way she needs to be loved. Give Laura a moment of peace and rest in this storm. Help her to keep her eyes on you while she walks on this faith journey through the stormy sea. Please speak to this storm and calm it. It can't be easy with Tom gone and I'm sure she longs for him to be there now speaking his wisdom and guidance into this moment. But you are the husband and the father she must lean on now and I know that you will not turn a deaf ear. I know that with each cut and with each tear you feel the deep pain and that you are present. By faith, I speak peace to Meaghan. I speak truth to Meaghan. I speak love in the holy name of Jesus. Bathe her in your presence and annoint her with your oil of healing. You alone are the Rock, The Rescuer, The Savior. By faith, I pray that the spirit of Hope and strength will fall upon Laura and Meaghan and they would know that they are not alone. Your grace is sufficient. You are our refuge a very present help in times of trouble. You are a strong tower, you are a shield about us. You will never leave us nor forsake us. In Jesus name, Amen

THQ Bulletin - Holy Spirit's touch

Description Holy Spirit's touch Submitted by Dorothy Brandt, Eugene Corps Details My daughter needs the Holy Spirit to touch her heart. She was once a committed, dedicated Christian. Now she says that God is "too big to only allow one way to Him." She's getting married in June by a Unitarian minister on the property of someone who has a Buddha statue in her yard. I like the man she is marrying and i know he will never break her heart but I think they both believe the same thing about Jesus. My husband says we can't interfere and she has to make her own choices. I don't argue with her but my mother heart aches to see her being led astray.

THQ Bulletin

Description Update - Mother's stroke & amazing healing Submitted by Sherry Hammers Details Thanks be to God! My family and I sincerely thank everyone...extended family, coworkers, friends, and whomever reached out to include my Mother, Laurie Soltis, in their prayers for healing after she had a stroke on Saturday 4/6. She's been in the hospital improving by leaps and bounds. She suffered no paralysis, only her speech and memory were affected. Now, she is speaking quite well, as forming sentences gets a bit easier each day. She's feisty as ever, but she gets frustrated when she can't remember something, but all in all, the doctors and nurses are amazed by her. So much so that she was released this morning! She is happy to be going home where she will continue speech and physical therapy and then the doctors feel they'll know in about 6 months any permanent damage she will have to live with. She's upbeat, lively during most of the day, but when she tires out that is it for her. My family and I are so grateful for all who uplifted her in prayer! I truly believe in miracles!!

Kelly Pensabene's Husband and Best Friend

Today I lost my best friend, my husband. He went home to our Lord. He suffered greatly for the last nine months without one word of complaint. He offered all his pain to The Lord with a smile. He will be remembered as a true soldier for Christ. Even though my heart is broken I have faith in The Lord and I will be restored. He died peacefully in my arms. He suffers no more. Matthew was loved by many and I know you are all hurting. I pray the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with you all and bring you the peace that passes all understanding.

Matthew Pensabene - Promoted to Glory!

Loved ones, I just received word from Lt. Kelly that Lt. Matthew Pensabene has passed away in the past half hour. Kelly informed me that Matthew died peacefully, without pain, with both herself and Phillip by his side. Details will be forth coming regarding services and other matters will be coming forth in due time. I thought you should know this as soon as possible. Thank you for all your love and support to the family and to Matthew. Matthew couldn't thank everyone enough for all that his been done on his and Kelly's behalf. At this time please refrain from calling Kelly. Emails and facebook encouragements would be greatly appreciated. Aloha. John Chamness, Major

THQ Bulletin

Description Prayer for Mom's Healing - Stroke Submitted by Sherry Hammers Details Please uplift my Mother, Laurie Soltis, in prayer. She's had many health problems since her major heart attack quite a few years ago and made it through all the trials and tribulations that can frustrate one when they are ill and yet, so very full of life. Mom's major worry...was always a stroke. Thank goodness she is in excellent hands at Bridgeport (CT) Hospital, where they saved her life when she had the heart attack, so all records are there and she is known, and has a comfort level. I and my boyfriend, Carlo (her "2nd son") briefly spoke with her yesterday, but she still cannot speak beyond long, drawn out "hard to understand" words or sentences she is trying to communicate. It was hard not to let her hear our tears. She is having another MRI this morning to ensure there is no blood on her brain. My mom is a very caring and loving person and I appreciate, as she and my whole family will if you keep her in your prayers for a speedy recovery from this terrible health blow. Thank you so much.

Kona and Honokaa Corps

Please continue to pray for the Kona Corps. Pray for Gary and Ann Todds for taking the helm in covering for the the Pensabenes, and at the same time, continues to work hard in Honokaa. Pray for God's strength and grace to be upon them each day! Continue to pray for the Pensabenes, as they are currently in Oklamoma while Matthew continues his cancer treatment. Pray for healing and God's awesome peace! Ann Todd writes, "Gary has been covering for the Lieutenants in Kona and traveling to Kona several times each week. We stay, on occasion, at the officer's quarters, but usually make the hour commute when needed. All is going as well as can be expected and the staff there has been wonderful in carrying on with the Thrift Store, the Day Care Center and the office. Honokaa continues to "plug away" with our small rummage sale, food pantry and the few services we offer. Please keep us all in prayer as we do the same for you. Give our love to the congregation and know that we think of you often."

Hilo - God's Doing

Our numbers for 9 saved (3 Hilo, 6 youth councils rededication) 478 served through our programs this week (lunch, pantry) 38 in Sunday attendance, actually it should be 45 since we were at camp. I'll change it if I can. This was a great week for Hilo Temple Corps. We were able to serve people through our lunch program and pantry/clothes vouchers - but unlike every week, a couple that we only see through these services attended church on Sunday. The man accepted Christ, along with two others in the congregation. At Youth Councils, the six delegates we brought had a meaningful, moving experience the whole weekend long and at Sunday service. They prayed at the altar as a corps. We are enjoying watching what God is doing in their lives. In His Hands, Shoshannah

May they remember and apply key principles that they have learned! God bless our Youth!

Brother Matthew

Dear loved ones: It is with a heavy heart that I share with you today that the Pensabene's have heard from their doctors that the chemo treatments for Matthew are not working as well as we had hoped. I am not even sure how to say this next part but the doctors have given a time frame to Matthew of 3-6 months. We certainly will continue to pray that God will do the miraculous and bring full healing to Matthew but this does cause us to be more urgent in our prayers for both he and Kelly. As you can imagine this news has been very difficult for them. Matthew has been amazing through this whole ordeal. His spirits have always been up and he continues to be such a positive witness in spite of the pain and difficulties. Kelly is also a huge hero in this as she has had to take on most of the Kona Corps operation in the midst of this and yet continues to praise God for his grace and kindness to them. However, this recent news brings with it the burden of knowing that soon everything will change. We are so happy that the division was able to assist them this past week with the visit of their daughters. It was a blessing for their family to be all together to share some happy and memorable times. I would encourage each of us to take a few moments each day as the Spirit brings their names and faces to you to lift them up in fervent prayer asking even now for a miracle to take place. I am sure they would also appreciate a card or email to let them know that you are praying for them. Lani and I will be with them this Thursday as we help them navigate the next steps. We ask that you pray for us to have the wisdom to know how best to help them. We trust in the certainty of the Resurrection and the Life. Major John Chamness
