Aleen B. - Heath and Marriage

We’re in a season of every feeling, I think. Last week, we got our marriage license, tomorrow it will be ONE MONTH until we get married and start our journey in married life...and, also we’re having some unexpected bumps and lumps in the road. I’m going to ask for your prayers and support and share some stuff: tomorrow, I go in for a CT scan for a lump on my neck, and then, next Tuesday, I’ll have surgery to have that lump removed. Based on past visits, the doctor is confident that all that is going on is a cyst in my neck (gross!). But, I’ll have at least a week of down time recovery. Guys, truthfully, I do not love the hospital, being away from work for week is a bummer, and resting is honestly something I need help doing...which must mean God is about to do some great things in me right about now. Will you pray that I let the stillness restore me and move me, that I experience healing, that I witness to God’s provision in it all, and that I see God at work in this unexpected stuff? Will you pray that I allow this time to prepare my heart and mind for this big life thing Jordan and I are entering into? Thanks for being my friends, ya’ll ❤️

Pray for Burkina Faso believers - 4 more deaths

4 KILLED IN NEW BURKINA FASO CHURCH ATTACK–FOURTH DEADLY RAID IN 4 WEEKS

May 28, 2019 by Lindy Lowry in

The wave of deadly violence on Christians in northern Burkina Faso continues. This past weekend, a new deadly attack on a church killed four worshippers and injured an unknown number of people.

The targeted attacks continue to mirror each other. On Sunday morning around 9 a.m., May 26, eight heavily armed individuals reportedly stormed the town of Toulfe (150 miles northwest of the capital city of Ouagadougou) on four motorcycles. They invaded the church and opened fire, killing three people. A fourth worshiper died later with critical injuries.

“The Christian community of Toulfe was the target of a terrorist attack gathered for Sunday prayers,” Ouagadougou Bishop Justin Kientega said in a statement. “The attack left four of the faithful dead.”

FOURTH REPORTED ATTACK ON CHRISTIANS IN 4 WEEKS

This is the fourth reported attack on Christians in the West African country in the past month. In late April, gunmen killed a Protestant pastor and five congregants after a church service in northern Burkina. On May 12, a church leader and five parishioners died during a worship service in a church attack in Dablo on May 12. Another four believers died in an attack two days later in the northern town of Ouahigouya.

In the wake of these attacks, our field tells us Christians are in hiding, and schools and churches are closed with thousands of believers fleeing to the south.

While Burkina Faso is not on the 2019 World Watch List, it isn’t far behind at No. 61.

BEHIND THE ATTACKS

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The government has blamed unnamed terrorist groups operating in the country and Africa’s surrounding Sahel region. Various reports indicate Islamist militants based in Mali, to the north, are using it as a launching pad for attacks on Burkina Faso and neighboring Niger.

Recent months in Burkina Faso have seen extremist violence as Islamic militants expand their reach. According to a report by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, the number of violent incidents in the country linked to the local affiliates of al Qaeda and ISIS rose from 24 in 2017 to 136 in 2018.

The string of attacks on churches may be a new tactic to disrupt what have traditionally been peaceful relations between the Muslim majority and Christians who make up a quarter of the nation of 19.2 million people. While Islamic jihadist violence has flared in Burkina Faso since 2016, attacks on churches in the landlocked country are a new phenomenon.

The country’s president, Roch Marc Christian Kabore, noted that terrorists are “changing their modus operandi, from stoking inter-communal conflict to trying to foment religious strife.”

PRAYING WITH THE CHURCH IN BURKINA FASO

Throughout sub-Saharan Africa, the church is on fire as persecuted believers walk faithfully through the flames of persecution. Please pray that Christians in Burkina Faso and beyond would be filled with God’s peace that surpasses all understanding.

Pray that local Christians would be strengthened in their faith and operate in unity amidst the attacks.

Pray for comfort, strength and provision for victims killed in the attack.

Pray for protection and peace in Burkina Faso and throughout Africa. Ask God to guide national, community and church leaders as they respond to this violence. Pray for wisdom and courage for church leaders as they lead their churches to be light in this increasing darkness.

Open Doors teams have recently visited northern Burkina Faso in the wake of these attacks. Check back here for their firsthand report.

Salem - Missing Mom and Son

At least four law enforcement agencies are searching two rural properties in Yamhill County in connection with a Salem mom and her young son who went missing more than a week ago.
Salem Police, Yamhill County Sheriffs, Oregon State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are searching a home near Gaston and a field on Hopewell Road northwest of Salem, said Lt. Treven Upkes of Salem Police.
They have been searching the properties since early Thursday morning, looking for Karissa Fretwell, 25, and her son William Fretwell, 3. The two were reported missing May 13 after Karissa did not show up for work.
The search in Hopewell includes a field about 1/4-mile in radius.
Authorities are searching the property in hopes of locating Karissa and William, or discovering evidence which may lead to their location, according to a press release from the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office.

Karissa Alyn Fretwell, 25 of Salem, and her three-year-old son, William (Billy) Fretwell, have not been seen or heard from since since May 13.

Deanna S. - Prayer and Encouragement

"Good Morning My Friends! I pray that you are having a blessed day!

I just wanted to reassure that you are being prayed for! With all the emails flying around about our financial situation and then the ones cancelling programs, sometimes we can get a bit discouraged in our ministry! I have been there personally! We were told many times to cut back and it was hard. When we had to let employees go, we had to take up their jobs. Sometimes it meant mowing the lawn at the Corps, being the janitor, picking up donations on top of all the regular Corps Programming. It isexhausting work especially when days off are few, but the rewards for persevering are greater than we can ever imagine! Through those times in our exhaustion we would see glimpses of how God is in Control! So… as you continue the amazing ministry that you are doing… please look for those moments with God!

Let us all remember each other in prayer during these difficult days. It is an honor to serve alongside you in this great Cascade Division!"

NEW ATTACK IN BURKINA FASO—CHRISTIANS IN HIDING, SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES CLOSED

May 15, 2019 by Lindy Lowry in

A day after militants ambushed a church and killed six, another attack in northern Burkina Faso targeting Christians has left four dead, including a church leader. These attacks on the church in the West African country, as well as others in the last few weeks, have invoked a state of panic among Christian communities in the region.

The country’s churches have seen a string of violence in less than three weeks. This most recent attack happened on Monday, May 13, during a public religious procession when armed men ambushed the parade. Reportedly, the attackers let the children go before killing four adults and destroying the statue of Mary the victims were carrying.

Also on Monday, suspected militants shot a Catholic priest in Dolbel in neighboring western Niger, one of the countries bordering Burkina Faso. He survived the attack with gunshot wounds to one hand and a leg.

Just a day earlier, 20 to 30 armed men ambushed a church service in the same region in the village of Dablo and opened fire on worshippers. Six people were killed in the attack in Burkina Faso, among them the church’s 34-year-old leader. Before they left, the attackers burned down the church, various shops and a health center.

And two weeks ago, armed men stormed a Protestant church after a worship service in Silgadji village in the country’s northeastern province of Soum. They executed six worshippers, including the church’s 80-year-old pastor,

A STATE OF PANIC IN NORTHERN BURKINA FASO

Fearful of more attacks, Christians in northern Burkina Faso are beginning to flee the conflict area for safer towns in the country’s southern area.

Those who remain are living in what is rapidly feeling more and more like a ghost town.

Churches and schools are now closed. And Christians are in hiding, said a local church leader who asked to be unnamed for security reasons. He told Open Doors: “No one dares to sleep in his house because of fear of being killed. It’s very hard for us. We need your prayers.”

THEY HAD JUST GATHERED FOR WORSHIP—ANOTHER CHURCH ATTACK KILLS 6 IN BURKINA FASO

May 14, 2019 by Lindy Lowry in AfricaStories of PersecutionUncategorized

Mirroring the April 28 attack in which gunmen executed a pastor and five congregants after a worship service in Burkina Fasoanother attack on a different church in the country has also left six Christians dead, including its young priest (above photo). The recent (May 12) attack marks the third on Christians in less than five weeks in the West African country that continues to struggle with a surge of Islamic militant violence.
At about 9 a.m. during a church service in the village of Dablo, armed gunmen on motorcycles, said to number between 20 and 30, ambushed the church. Dablo Mayor Ousmane Zongo told AFP news agency: “They started firing as the congregation tried to flee.”
The attackers then set fire to the church and other area buildings in the village, including a health center.
Those killed include 33-year-old Father Simeon Yampa—described as a “humble, obedient and full of love”—and church elders.
A local journalist told the BBC that residents were angry that soldiers in a nearby base did not respond promptly.
The attack has Dablo residents living in a state of panic and fear, Zongo told the BBC. “People are holed up in their homes, nothing is going on. The shops and stores are closed. It’s practically a ghost town,” he said

Franklin G. - Asia Bibi and Others

"Some great news today! We thank God that Asia Bibi is safely out of Pakistan and reunited with family in Canada.  Thank you to everyone who prayed for Asia’s release and for God’s hand of protection on her. And thank you Canada for opening your doors to Asia! This woman was persecuted for her Christian faith and spent 8 years on death row after being accused of blasphemy.

The Chairman of the British Pakistani Christian Association said that Asia had bravely held onto her faith throughout the brutal ordeal. "She was offered freedom on several occasions by officials and prison workers pressuring her to convert to Islam and if she did, she would immediately be released … She refused to capitulate, she is a testimony to us all." Please continue praying for the thousands of other persecuted Christians around the world who are suffering because of their faith in Jesus Christ."

Susan D. - Dad's Health

I got a phone call this morning from my sister and she told me that my dad was in the hospital because he suffered what seems to be a minor stroke. This is the call I’ve been dreading as my dad is approaching his 75th birthday and has had some health issues due to some of his experiences in the Vietnam war. I was able to drive to Loma Linda and see him at the VA hospital, thank you Major Nancy H. for letting me go. Also, thank you Captain Ochoa for praying with me prior to heading out to see my dad. When I got to the hospital and into the ER my dad realized I was there and he began to cry. Please know that in my almost 48 years of life I’ve only seen my dad cry when his parents passed away. My heart broke and my concern grew when I saw him cry while he lied in his hospital bed. Please pray for my dad and especially my mom because she is having a hard time processing this. Thank you all.

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. — Last month, as the 20th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting approached, STEM School Highlands Ranch joined hundreds of schools near Denver in closing temporarily amid security concerns. The anniversary came and went, and schools returned to their routines.
But on Tuesday afternoon, the STEM school’s worst fears were realized when eight of its students were shot, one fatally, and two fellow students were being held as suspects.
“We know two individuals walked into the STEM school, got deep inside the school and engaged students in two separate locations,” Sheriff Tony Spurlock of Douglas County said at a news conference.
At 6:45 p.m., about five hours after the shooting, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office released a statement confirming that one of the eight who had been shot, an 18-year-old man, had died.

THEY REFUSED TO DENOUNCE JESUS—PASTOR, 5 OTHERS SHOT AFTER CHURCH SERVICE IN BURKINA FASO

May 7, 2019 by Lindy Lowry in AfricaStories of Persecution

Last Sunday seemed like any Sunday for 80-year-old Pastor Pierre OuIt, who has spent 40 years serving his church and Sirgadji village community in the northeastern Soum province of Burkina Faso. On April 28, he gathered for worship with his congregation in the West African country. And like every Sunday, he preached the Word of God with the wisdom that seasoned years of life and ministry bring.

But shortly after the service, an ordinary Sunday suddenly turned deadly and a church building where worshippers had just gathered became a crime scene.

KILLED FOR FOLLOWING JESUS

At about 1 pm, while Pastor Pierre was still talking with several congregants in the churchyard, a dozen men on motorbikes stormed the area.
A local leader who wished to remain anonymous told World Watch Monitor“The assailants asked the Christians to convert to Islam, but the pastor and the others refused.”
Reportedly, the attackers gathered Pastor Pierre and the five other congregants under a tree and then confiscated their Bibles and cell phones.
“Then they called them, one after the other, behind the church building where they shot them dead,” the leader said.
In addition to Pastor Pierre, the attackers killed his son, Wend-Kuni, and his brother-in-law (a church deacon), Zoéyandé Sawadogo, as well as believers Sayouba and Arouna Sawadogo, and a primary school teacher, Elie Boena. Another was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital.
The men then set the church building and two motorbikes on fire. Before they left, they stole sheep and a bag of rice from Pastor Pierre’s home.
He and his five congregants were buried the same day in a ceremony that drew people from both Christian and Muslim communities. The pastor leaves behind his wife and six other children.
Other locals reported that the next day, the same attackers (some of them known to village residents as “young men who’ve been radicalized”) came back into the village “searching for Christians.”
The sources say the armed groups can move with impunity because of the lack of law enforcement in the area in the West African country.

“I WOULD RATHER DIE THAN LEAVE”

Previously, Pastor Pierre told relatives about his concerns over the deterioration of security in the region, though there had been no incidents in his village.
The community leader said that when he and others advised the pastor to leave the area, he refused, saying he “would rather die for his faith than leave the community he has been serving for 40 years.”
In the last few months, more than 100 Christians have fled the area, moving farther south, more than 46 miles away. In February, armed men believed to be Islamist militants killed a church leader in the southeast region of Nohao, as he was returning from Togo.
Last Sunday’s violence in Burkina Faso that took the life of Pastor Pierre and his five congregants appears to have been the first attack, specifically on a church building, in which believers in Burkina Faso have been killed by Islamist extremists.

U.S. / Iran Tensions

The United States deployed an aircraft carrier strike group and a bomber task force to the Middle East in response to "clear indications" Iran and Iranian proxies were planning an attack on U.S. forces in the region, U.S. officials said.

Late Sunday night, the White House made the surprise announcement that the USS Abraham Lincoln and a bomber task force were being deployed in response to unspecified "troubling and escalatory indications and warnings."

Pray for Israel/Gaza

The death toll continues to rise Sunday on both sides of the Israel-Gaza border in one of the most intense flare-ups of violence in the region in years, shattering a month-long lull in attacks.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired more than 600 rockets into southern Israel in less than 24 hours, killing at least four Israelis and leaving several more in critical condition.

Israel has retaliated with dozens of airstrikes against militant sites in Gaza. More than a dozen Palestinians, including a pregnant woman and her 14-month old niece, have also been killed.

According to Haaretz, four Israeli men and 16 Palestinians were killed so far since tensions increased along the border on Friday. Four Israelis were also wounded as rockets fell on the Israeli south on Saturday.

President Trump reacted Sunday night on Twitter: “Once again, Israel faces a barrage of deadly rocket attacks by terrorist groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad. We support Israel 100% in its defense of its citizens... To the Gazan people — these terrorist acts against Israel will bring you nothing but more misery. END the violence and work towards peace - it can happen!”

Also at home in Scotland please pray for my corps family as they celebrate and say goodbye to a beautiful soul and retired officer today our hearts are with them. KB H. - Last Moments with Mom

Update:

"Dialysis had been tried twice and it was unsuccessful both times. The infection has made it to the bloodstream and this blood was telling the doctors that doing dialysis is not possible. She cannot get an MRI to see if there is any brain damage from the seizures or to see if there is any infection in or around her brain because she has a pacemaker. The next thought was to try to do a CT scan with contrast and that was quickly ruled out because the contrast would got straight to her already failing kidneys. The doctor said basically that my mom’s blood has become infected and now her body is slowly becoming a poison unto itself.
My mom is an amazing woman and has a heart of gold. She would give anyone the opportunity to be a part of her life and they were apart of hers.
So we have now removed all of the life support systems and she is on what is called comfort care. This is where they make Her comfortable and she will slowly pass away. I get to have the honor and privilege to be with my mom as she is ushered into the presence of Jesus in the Throne Room of Heaven. I love you momma. Please continue to pray for my momma and my family as we learn how to navigate this."

Pray for Nigeria - 25 Christians deaths

They came at night. And they came with death on their minds. On Monday, April 29, around 8 pm, Boko Haram fighters invaded the Christian community of Kuda near Madagali in Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria. The terrorists surrounded the community and went door to door, killing as many as 25 people.

The next day, they returned.

As security agents and community members prepared for the burials of their loved ones, Boko Haram members were spotted approaching for a second attack on the grieving community. As a result, funeral preparations were abandoned as bereaved believers, those from neighboring communities and security agents fled.

Since the attack, many more villagers have fled the town. Christian leaders in the area told Open Doors, “We are in danger, we have no one to fight for us to end this killing of our people.”

The incident is the latest in a long line of attacks by Boko Haram in the area–a stronghold for fighters loyal to Abubakar Shekau (known to be the leader of Boko Haram) and they operate from hideouts in the forests nearby, stealing supplies, killing villagers and attacking security forces.

More than 27,000 people have been killed in the decades-long bloody insurgency and 2 million others displaced by Boko Haram.
