Portland Tabernacle/ Leaders & People

There are times when change needs to happen. This is the situation with the Portland Tabernacle now.

Some of you have seen the Facebook postings from last night that referenced the “end of an era” at the Tab. It is true that there is an end of an era on Sandy Blvd but the ministry is alive and well! Captains Mike and Jillian O’Brien led a wonderful service of celebration yesterday and next week will kick off their transitional year or so at the Clackamas Ministry Center at DHQ. This will allow us the time to identify the right location for a new ministry in Clackamas County.

Please pray for the O’Briens as they lead this temporary time of change and growth. They have identified several focus groups that are allowing the corps family to speak into the future ministry that will develop as a result of this geographical change.

Thank you for your interest and your partnership in prayer for the new expression of ministry that is being birthed!

God bless you today!

Monica K. - Mark's Health Update

Thursday Evening Update:

Mark did not get to come home today. The doctor and nurses seem to think tomorrow might be the day. They upped one of his Blood Pressure meds and are hopeful this might be the right combination.

They came this afternoon and did the Kidney Doppler. It was a very through ultrasound. The tech couldn’t tell us anything and we were hoping to get the results tonight but no such luck.

Hopefully tomorrow brings good news.

Nancy D. - Ernie's mom

Team Cascade:

Lt. Ernie’s mother has experienced a serious medical episode in Pocatello and is undergoing treatment currently.

He has shared this and would appreciate the prayer support of his Army family. We want to live out the words of James 4:14-15a, “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.”

Thank you for faithful prayers for our fellow officers.

God bless each of you!

Mike J. - Health/Headache

"Gonna try to finally get some rest. So much on my heart and mind. Have not gone to bed yet. Came back last night from preparing dinner meals and tried to go to sleep. An incredible migraine hit soon after and no one of the medication I take helped. So I stayed up all night. Praying for rest tonight."

Raymond D. - Cascade Division Prayer

Good Evening Everyone,

Isaiah 12:2 reminds us, “Indeed, God is my salvation; I will trust Him and not be afraid, for Yah, the Lord, is my strength and my song. He has become my salvation.”

If you would like to join me in prayer, please do!

Dear God in Heaven, we love You.

We continue to lift up the people and the places devastated by these fires. May they find the food, shelter, help, and protection they need. Point them in the direction they need to go to begin their recovery. Send the people and the resources they need to climb out of the ashes. Give them the determination, courage, strength, and hope to find their way to safety and recovery.

We ask Your protection over the many people and agencies who stand to assist. Lord, they are working hard to serve those affected by both the fires and the virus. We are thankful for their dedication and hard work. Give them what they need to serve their neighbors. Give them the strength to meet the needs of so many. Give them the rest and rejuvenation required to keep themselves healthy and well. Lord, they may not hear this prayer, but let them know how thankful we are for what they do to show their love for You and their love for others.

Lord, let the flames be extinguished and may the land heal. Let the smoke clear and the blue skies return. Let the virus end and health return. Let the people heal and praise Your name.

We pray and ask these things tonight because You are our salvation, because we trust in You, and because You are our strength.

Amen.

God Bless,

David S. - Wife injured

Not a good day today. Diane fell at our food pantry. She had to get stitches, sprained her wrist and can’t walk due to a very swelled and bruised knee. She has to see an orthopedic surgeon to see what is wrong with her knee. They think it’s torn tendons and ligaments but the x-rays only show the bones.

Raymond D. - Division / Fire

Greetings All,

I just would like to take a moment this morning to pray about the fires going on in the division:

Lord, we love You. We lift up the people affected by the fires that are raging throughout the division and specially in Oregon. From the very south of the division to the boarder with Washington, from the coast all the way through to Idaho, the fires burn and the smoke covers us. People are having to evacuate their homes. Lord, lives have been lost, homes and property burned, pets and animals are gone. So many thousands of us are affected… You know each of us by name and are Your children. Wrap Your arms of protection around us and bring us to safety.

We ask that You protect the first responders who are fighting these fires, carrying out the rescues of those endangered, and planning and carrying out the response. Give them wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and the courage they need to carry out these dangerous and heroic deeds. Thank You for them and provide the resources needed during these battles.

Lord, we are also thankful for the many agencies that have come together to care for those who are affected. The shelter, food, spiritual care, and love they provide is so important right now. We think of the Salvation Army officers, employees, and volunteers who are on the front lines, serving those in need… serving You. Give them all they need to carry out their work, including the safety and rest they need during this most difficult of times.

We pray for an end to the fires, the protection of the people, and that through all of this, You may be glorified.

In Your precious name we pray.

Amen.

Psalm 56: 3-4a tells us, “When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I will not fear.”

God Bless,

Captain Raymond D.

Jason K. - Medford Fire

As I reflect on my day yesterday and taste the smoke in my mouth as we continue to breath in smoke no matter where we go.  I am thankful for living in a community that is resilient. A community that may get knocked down but it doesn’t stay knocked down. A community that comes together during a time of need. I am in awe of people who are dedicated to help others even through their own worry, pain, and loss.

Yesterday afternoon we had the opportunity to pick up food from a grocery store in Phoenix, Oregon. This food will be a great help as we prepare to provide the meals at the EXPO for the evacuees. As we drove into Phoenix it was heart breaking to look upon neighborhoods that I had driven past many times during our years living in this community to only see the burnt remains.

Over the years I have been deployed to various Emergency Disaster Service operations with The Salvation Army. I have come into the aftermath of tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, and floods. I have listened to the stories of what people experienced through those situations.  During those experiences I have been there to be support to people going through the emotional roller coaster of dealing with tragedy and loss.

But, what is happening now is different. I’m not walking into a community as a stranger giving support to EDS efforts for a couple of weeks with the plan to then go back home. This is my community. This is my home. We have employees, friends, and corps/church members who have either lost their homes, are helping loved ones who lost their homes, and/or have been evacuated and are scattered throughout the state.

I have hope and am faithful in trusting that God will give us the clarity and focus to do our part in helping, comforting, and being present as our community goes through this difficult journey.

Angela N. - Prayers

Prayer for the Protection and Safety of Family

Lord, I pray Your emotional, physical, and spiritual protection over my kids (grandkids). Keep evil far from them, and help them to trust You as their refuge and strength. I pray You will guard their minds from harmful instruction, and grant them discernment to recognize truth. I pray You will make them strong and courageous in the presence of danger, recognizing that You have overcome and will set right all injustice and wrong one day. Help them to find rest in Your shadow, as they live in the spiritual shelter You provide for them. Let them know that the only safe place is in Jesus, and that their home on earth is only temporary.  - by Rebecca Barlow Jordan

Tasha A. - Estacada and surrounding

Our home and all of Estacada is officially in stage 3 evacuation. This means everyone needs to leave. Pray for everyone in the red area and their homes.

Jason K. - Fire Evacuation

This has definitely been a whirlwind of a day. I had no idea this day would go as it did. I come out of a zoom Advisory Board meeting to discover there is a  fire causing evacuations from Ashland through talent and Phoenix. We quickly move into action to convert the HOPE House into an evacuation shelter. Hours later we are under threat of posible evacuation as police drive around our site announcing that we need to prepare for evacuation. Many of our employees and church members rushed to their homes to get their family members and leave due to evacuation orders.

Many people have lost their homes. Many people are scared and panicked. God will bring us all through this difficulty. We pray for his protection and help through all of it. Tomorrow(today) will not be business as usual. It will have its challenges. I pray tomorrow as we figure out how to manage through the loss, destruction, and sorrow we will also be able to see the blessing of having a tomorrow.

Jean B. - Health

Prayer needed again, please, for my son John Potts. He went in for a final checkup and God was with him!

' I Came in to get a new ultrasound to confirm that taking the blood thinner shots to the belly since June got rid of the blood clot in my right leg ... and instead am told it has extended much farther up my leg/vein. They want to admit me, put in "a filter" and change my medication.

Yes. The doc had me go straight to ER and I'm now in the process of being admitted. They're getting ready to start a heparin drip. Later on the radiologist will be inserting a filter into the aorta below my heart (which is where the clot would go if it breaks up)

So I'll be spending my "vacation" in the hospital. Unfortunately it's potentially life threatening, so there's really no choice in the matter.' Thank you all for your prayers. 🙏 Jean Potts Bowler
